Symbols
The water is a symbol of power for Percy as well as life. When Percy goes into the water he is at home and given strength to fight on. The water also represents his connection to his father because even though he never saw him Percy could always feel his father was with him when he stepped in water.
Percy's dreams are also a symbol it is a hint from the gods telling Percy what he needs to do in order to complete his mission. The dreams help Percy move forward and help him uncover the truth. Zeus's Lightning Bolt can also be seen as a symbol same with Poseidon's trident and Hades’s helm they are all symbols of power and when lost the god feels as if his power has been taken however the way they deal with it is different. As for the Thunderbolt, it can also be seen as a symbol of peace because without it peace would be disrupted by the war of gods.
